Watan Yui was an Atayal indigenous chief active in the nineteenth century whose domain covered the mountainous areas of modern Daxi and Fuxing townships in Taoyuan. As Han settler expansion pushed into the foothills of northern Taiwan, Watan Yui led Atayal warriors in sustained armed resistance against encroaching settlers and Qing frontier militia, defending his community's territory for decades. He is one of the most significant resistance figures in the history of the northern Taiwan aboriginal frontier, embodying the persistent tension between expanding Han colonization and indigenous territorial defense at the Qing-era 'savage boundary.' Though ultimately unable to halt the long-term demographic tide, his determined resistance preserved Atayal territorial integrity for a generation.
