Democratic Transition
1957–1989
Chan Yi-hua was born in 1957 in Chiayi. In the late 1980s he joined the street movements, working in the ranks of the protests rather than on the stage.
On 7 April 1989 Deng Nan-jung set himself on fire at the offices of Freedom Era Weekly. On 19 May his funeral procession walked as far as Chiehshou Road in front of the Presidential Office, where barricades stopped it. Chan walked up to the barricades, set himself alight and died on the spot. He was thirty-two.
He left no long statement. The photographs and reports of that day mostly centre on Deng; Chan's name tends to come after the word "and."
Three years later Article 100 of the Criminal Code was amended, and speech was no longer sedition.
