Chen Weiying was a northern Taiwan-born classical scholar and educator who became one of the most influential teachers in the Taipei area during the mid-to-late Qing period. Holding a juren degree, he spent much of his life directing academies in the Danshui Subprefecture, training generations of students in classical learning. Associated with the Mingzhi Academy and Xuehai Academy, he cultivated the local Confucian scholarly tradition in northern Taiwan. As a poet of note in his own right, Chen contributed to a local literary culture independent of mainland models. His students went on to pass examinations and shape the intellectual life of northern Taiwan, making him a foundational figure in the educational history of the region.
