Chen Zhouquan

Chen Zhouquan led a rebellion in the Changhua area of central Taiwan in 1795, less than a decade after the major Lin Shuangwen Uprising. Exploiting reduced Qing military presence, he mobilized Tiandihui networks to attack and briefly capture the Changhua county seat. The uprising was suppressed within months when reinforcements arrived and Quanzhou-origin militia — who had long-standing ethnic rivalries with Chen's Zhangzhou followers — joined the counterattack. Chen was captured and executed. His rebellion illustrates the endemic instability of Qing Taiwan: the combination of Zhangzhou-Quanzhou ethnic conflict, opportunistic secret society organizing, and persistent administrative weakness repeatedly produced large-scale uprisings through the eighteenth century.
