Huang Shujing was appointed in 1722 as one of Taiwan's first two imperial inspectors-general, tasked with conducting a systematic survey of the recently pacified frontier territory. He traveled extensively across western Taiwan, visiting indigenous communities, Han settler villages, and coastal ports. His observations were compiled into the Taihai Shichailu (Record of a Mission to the Taiwan Sea), completed in 1724, covering indigenous customs in three detailed sections. This remains the most comprehensive official account of early Qing Taiwan and the primary reference for historians studying indigenous societies of the period. Huang's meticulous documentation of languages, agricultural practices, and ceremonies gave the Qing bureaucracy its first detailed empirical knowledge of the island's diverse peoples.
