Biography

Jiang Biyu was born in 1921 in Yongle-cho, Taipei. She was the daughter of Jiang Wei-shui's younger sister Jiang Hua and was later adopted as Jiang Wei-shui's own daughter, growing up in that household with its nationalist and anti-Japanese convictions. In 1933 she entered the nursing course at Taihoku Imperial University and from 1935 worked as a nurse at the university hospital.

In 1937 she met Zhong Heming there, a patient on the ward, and they later married. When he left Meiji University in 1940 for Guangdong to join Qiu Niantai's Eastern District Service Corps, she went with him and did in the field what she had done in the hospital.

They returned to Taiwan after the war. Her husband became principal of Keelung Middle School and founded the Kuangming Pao, and on 14 October 1950 he was shot at Machangting. She was arrested in the same case and imprisoned, and after her release raised their children alone.

She lived until 9 January 1995. Her position never changed: in 1988 she served on the executive committee of the Chinese Unification Alliance, and she argued for unification to the end of her life — the direction she and her husband had set out for as young people, and the half of the story many later preferred not to raise. The two names she was known by were both given to her by others: Jiang Wei-shui's daughter, and the wife of the principal of Keelung Middle School.
