Lin Zhanmei
Cultural Patron of Qianyuan Garden

Lin Zhanmei was the foremost cultural patron of northern Taiwan in the mid-nineteenth century. Born into a wealthy Hakka merchant-gentry family in Hsinchu, he used the family fortune to build the Qianyuan (Hidden Garden) estate, which became a gathering place for poets, calligraphers, and scholars, transforming Hsinchu into the cultural capital of Qing northern Taiwan. Lin was himself a prolific classical poet who left a substantial body of verse. When the Dai Chaochun Rebellion erupted, Lin organized and personally funded local militia forces to defend Hsinchu, demonstrating the dual role of the Qing gentry as cultural arbiter and military organizer. The garden was eventually destroyed in fighting, but Lin Zhanmei's legacy as northern Taiwan's great literary patron endures.
