Qiu Lianggong was a Qing naval commander from Kinmen who became the hero of the final campaign against Cai Qian, Taiwan's most formidable pirate-rebel of the Jiaqing period. After years of failed attempts to suppress Cai Qian's fleet, Qiu led a decisive naval engagement in waters northeast of Taiwan in 1809, routing the pirate forces and killing Cai Qian himself. The victory ended more than a decade of disruption to Taiwan Strait commerce and coastal security. Qiu was ennobled for his achievement and rose to command the Fujian Land Forces. Back in his native Kinmen, his mother's memorial arch still stands as a monument combining family piety and military glory.
