Hugh Ritchie was a Scottish Presbyterian missionary who arrived in Taiwan in 1867 and spent over a decade building up the Church of Christ in Taiwan in the southern regions. Working alongside James Maxwell and other early missionaries, Ritchie established congregations across southern Taiwan and trained indigenous evangelists. He was a dedicated language learner who mastered Taiwanese Southern Min and contributed to Bible translation in romanized Amoy script, supporting mother-tongue evangelism that became a hallmark of the Presbyterian mission. Ritchie and his wife also worked with Pingpu indigenous communities in the Tainan area. He died in 1879 at only 39, but his decade of foundational work helped establish the organizational and linguistic infrastructure on which the Presbyterian Church in Taiwan would grow.
