Biography

Sun Yuanheng was a Qing official and poet from Anhui who served as Taiwan Sea-Defense Sub-Prefect around 1706, stationed in the Tainan area. He compiled his verse and prose observations into the Chikan Ji (Chikan Collection), one of the earliest and most literarily accomplished Chinese-language works composed on Taiwan. The collection's poems describe the tropical climate, Siraya indigenous customs, the perilous sea crossing, and the rough life of Han frontier settlers, blending literary artistry with historical documentation. Sun Yuanheng's double identity as official and poet positioned him as an early voice in Taiwan's distinct literary tradition, offering a cultured mainland perspective on the alien frontier that he recorded with care.
