Teresa Teng, born in 1953 in Yunlin, was the most representative legendary singer of twentieth-century Chinese-language popular music. Born into a military family, she showed a gift for singing from childhood and debuted as a young girl, quickly rising to fame on a clear, sweet voice. Her repertoire spanned Mandarin, Taiwanese, Cantonese, and Japanese, blending Chinese folk tunes, ballads, and modern pop into a distinctive gentle style. Songs such as "The Moon Represents My Heart," "Sweet as Honey," and "I Only Care About You" have been sung continuously, becoming cross-generational Chinese-language classics. In the 1970s and 1980s her influence reached across Taiwan, Hong Kong, Southeast Asia, and Japan, where she repeatedly won major awards, one of the few Chinese-language singers to gain international fame.
