Wang Shijie

Wang Shijie was one of the earliest Han Chinese pioneers to settle the Hsinchu area of northern Taiwan. Around 1704 he led settlers from Guangdong to clear land, build irrigation channels, and establish villages in what had been Taokas indigenous territory on Taiwan's northwestern coastal plain. His enterprise formed the nucleus of the Han community that grew into the city of Hsinchu. The Wang family became one of the foundational gentry lineages of the Hsinchu area, with descendants active in local politics and commerce through the late Qing period. Wang Shijie represents the vanguard of the northward Han migration wave that transformed the demographic landscape of northern Taiwan during the early eighteenth century.
