Wu Guangliang was a Guangdong-born military commander who led the construction of the central cross-island trail (the Baguashan Trail) in 1875, as part of Shen Baozhen's 'Open the Mountains, Pacify the Savages' campaign. Beginning from Zhushān in Nantou County, his forces cut a 265-kilometer road through some of Taiwan's most rugged mountain terrain, crossing the Central Mountain Range to reach Beinan on the east coast. Completed after months of brutal construction through hostile indigenous territory, the central trail was the most difficult of the three Qing cross-island routes. Its completion connected Taiwan's east and west coasts for the first time by overland path, facilitating expansion of Qing administration into eastern Taiwan and accelerating Han colonization of indigenous territories.
