Biography

Zhou Zhongxuan served as magistrate of Zhuluó County (modern Chiayi) during the early Qing period and oversaw the compilation of the Zhuluó County Gazetteer, completed in 1717 — one of the earliest county-level gazetteers of Taiwan. The work provides irreplaceable primary source data on the geography, indigenous communities, Han settlements, agricultural production, and social customs of southern and central Taiwan. Zhou also promoted agricultural settlement, established charity schools, and worked to maintain order between Han settlers and Siraya communities. His gazetteer became a foundational reference for subsequent administrators and historians studying early Qing colonization of central Taiwan.
